The general contractor finished work on the exterior of the dike house which RVDV has designed for a family in Barendrecht, The Netherlands. The client will now complete the interior by installing the interior walls, doors and stairs and fitting out the bathroom and kitchen. While the house reflects a traditional village typology, it is very much a modern interpretation of the typical Dutch dike house.
The house has largely been built in line with passive house principles. The exterior walls and roof are made of prefabricated and super insulated wooden elements (up to 300 mm thick), the house is completely air-tight and the doors and windows are fitted with triple glazing. As a result, very little energy from external resources will be required.
